Children’s practices and responses have consistently been so fascinating to me. Considering Erikson, Piaget, and Kohlberg’s various hypotheses on human improvement has given me an a lot further comprehension of these practices. In spite of the fact that their hypotheses are extraordinary, they do share three suppositions as indicated by an article on SparkNotes.com: 1. Individuals go through stages in a particular request, with each stage expanding on limits created in the past stage. 2. Stages are identified with age. 3. Advancement is spasmodic, with subjectively various limits rising in each stage† (Psychology/Development, 2012, p. 1). While considering these three scholars it has influenced my own concept of human advancement in two different ways. Also, my perspective on how a patient has been raised has influenced my nursing care. I concede that when I care for a youngster, a dominant part of the time I quietly censure the guardians for the ill-advised activ ities of the kid. It is simple for me to swear off teaching a pre-adult patient. I regularly state to myself, it isn't the child’s issue and reason them for their practices, essentially in light of the fact that I accepted that is the way they were raised and they don’t know better. In the wake of finding out about Erik Erikson’s hypothesis on advancement, I understood that a child’s improvement isn't exclusively reliant on the manner in which the youngster was raised by their folks. There are other contributing components being developed, as indicated by an article that analyzes Erikson’s sees versus Freud’s titles Erik Erikson. McLeod (2013) states that Erikson, â€Å"emphasized the job of culture and society†, (p. 1) in the advancement of character. In the wake of examining Erikson it has changed my comprehension of why youngsters carry on and respond in specific circumstances. In McLeod’s (2013) article it likewise makes reference to... ...n Simply Psychology, â€Å"children at this age like to investigate their general surroundings and they are continually finding out about their environment† (McLeod, 2013, figure 2). Everything hazardous was kept in bolted drawers and bureau, so I figured the youngster would be sheltered wandering around the little test room. Additionally, the episode including the child’s eye was damaging to him and after the stitches are set it would cause significantly more injury. I disclosed to the guardians that so as to impart independence into this youngster, they should permit the kid to investigate to beat any feelings of dread that might be brought upon from this horrendous mishap. That is only one case of how I used Erikson’s hypotheses into my nursing practice. I will keep on bringing it into my arrangement of care, since I currently have a comprehension of why kids respond and carry on with a specific goal in mind towards various circumstances.

Different Mental Disorders - Free Essay Example

There are many different mental disorders that are outlined within the book of importance to mental health clinicians, including PTSD. How individuals feel, think, and behave are what help drive different perspectives to derive. From researching combat veterans suffering from PTSD, I found similarities and differences between the different psychological perspectives that was focused upon. When comparing and contrasting the behavioral and cognition perspectives in terms of evaluating PTSD among combat veterans, they are more similar, while on the other hand, comparing the biological perspective to the other perspective there were hardly any similarities but more differences. Between the psychological perspectives of cognition and behavior, I found the similarity that both used therapy as a treatment component and not a medicinal approach. I think that this is important because instead of turning to medications to fix the problem, using exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, both help to work through the issue rather than pushing it aside and taking a pill. Also, therapy was found to be more effective than the medicinal approach and I think this is due to the fact that with medications, the efficacy and confidence was expressed in a negative manner due to the fact that side effects of a medication can occur and dependence upon it can accumulate. When looking at the biological approach and trying to connect it to the cognitive approach and behavioral approach, it is not easy to do so. The biological approach focuses its attention on the endocrine system of the human body, expressing that the problem originates from out of balance hormone levels, when the cognitive approach focuses on thoughts within the find and the behavioral approach focusing on the actions elicited from the combat veteran. When getting an education, it is learned that biological factors focus on genetics and hormones, which holds true here. On the other hand, the cognitive approach concentrates on the negative thoughts and acting upon them to realize they are just thoughts and dont need to be drawn out into actions. The cognitive perspective focuses more so on the psychological aspect, whereas the biological perspective focused more so on the physiological aspect. I found no perspective better than another one, but rather found that different perspectives add more knowledge to understand the topic as a whole. There are different ways human thoughts and behaviors are elicited. New treatments and etiology may develop from the different types of psychological perspectives if research is continued onward regarding a topic with not much data like this one. The older name of posttraumatic stress disorder, shell shock, represents this type pertaining to combat veterans because it places a shell around them, to hide in, and not want to get help in. With the advancements in technology that continue each and every day, the research that is continued onward with this topic, and the more awareness that accumulates regarding PTSD among combat veterans, treatment for these victims is essential.

Phytoremediation Essay Example For Students

Phytoremediation Essay Introduction:In recent years it has become clear that some environmental chemicals can cause risks to the developing embryo and fetus. Evaluating the developmental toxicity of environmental chemicals is now a prominent public health concern. The suspected association between TCE and congenital cardiac malformations warrants special attention because TCE is a common drinking water contaminant that is detected in water supplies throughout the U.S. and the world. There is a lot of concern about the clean up of toxic pollutants from the environment. Traditional methods for cleaning up contaminated sites such as dig and haul, pump and treat, soil venting, air sparging and others are generally harmful to habitats. Some methods strip the soil of vital nutrients and microorganisms, so nothing can grow on the site, even if it has been decontaminated. Typically these mechanical methods are also very expensive. Most of the remediation technologies that are currently in use are very expensive, r elatively inefficient and generate a lot of waste, to be disposed of. Cleaning up contamination:Phytoremediation is a novel, efficient, environmentally friendly, low-cost technology, which uses plants and trees to clean up soil and water contaminated with heavy metals and/or organic contaminants such as solvents, crude oil, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and other toxic compounds from contaminated environments. This technology is useful for soil and water remediation. Mechanisms:Phytoremediation uses one basic concept: the plant takes the pollutant through the roots. The pollutant can be stored in the plant (phytoextraction), volatized by the plant (phytovolatization), metabolized by the plant (phytodegradation), or any combination of the above. Phytoextraction is the uptake and storage of pollutants in the plants stem or leaves. Some plants, called hyperaccumulators, draw pollutants through the roots. After the pollutants accumulate in the stem and leaves the plants are harvested. Then plants can be either burned or sold. Even if the plants cannot be used, incineration and disposal of the plants is still cheaper than traditional remediation methods. As a comparison, it is estimated a site containing 5000 tons of contaminated soil will produce only 20-30 tons of ash (Black, 1995). This method is particularly useful when remediating metals. Some metals are also being recycled from the ash. Phytovolatization is the uptake and vaporization of polluta nts by a plant. This mechanism takes a solid or liquid contaminant and transforms it to an airborne vapor. The vapor can either be the pure pollutant, or the plant can metabolize the pollutant before it is vaporized, as in the case of mercury, lead and selenium (Boyajian and Carriera, 1997; Black, 1995; Wantanbe, 1997). Phytodegradation is plants metabolizing pollutants. After the contaminant has been drawn into the plant, it assimilates into plant tissue, where the plant then degrades the pollutant. This metabolization by plant-derived enzymes such as nitrosedictase, laccase, dehalogenase, and nitrilase assimilates into plant tissue, where the plant then degrades the pollutant. This metabolization by plant-derived enzymes such as nitroredictase, laccase, dehalogenase, and nitrilase, has yet to be fully documented, but has been demonstrated in field studies (Boyajian and Carriera, 1997). The daughter compounds can be either volatized or stored in the plant. If the daughter compounds are relatively benign, the plants can still be used in traditional applications. The most effective current phytoremediation sites in practice combine these three mechanisms to clean up a site. For example, poplar trees can accumulate, degrade and volatize the pollutants in the remediation of organics. Techniques: Phytoremediation is more than just planting and letting the foliage grow; the site must be engineered to prevent erosion and flooding and maximize pollutant uptake. There are 3 main planting techniques for phytoremediation. 1.Growing plants on the land, like crops. This technique is most useful when the contaminant is within the plant root zone, typically 3 6 feet (Ecological Engineering, 1997), or the tree root zone, typically 10-15 feet. 2.Growing plants in water (aquaculture). Water from deeper aquifers can be pumped out of the ground and circulated through a â€Å"reactor† of plants and then used in an application where it is returned to the earth (e.g. irrigation)3.Growing trees on the land and constructing wells through which tree roots can grow. This method can remediate deeper aquifers in-situ. The wells provide an artery for tree roots to grow toward the water and form a root system in the capillary fringe. Determining which plant to use:The majority of c urrent research in the phytoremediation field revolves around determining which plant works most efficiently in a given application. Not all plant species will metabolize, volatize, and/or accumulate pollutants in the same manner. The goal is to ascertain which plants are most effective at remediating a given pollutant. Research has yielded some general guidelines for groundwater phytoremediation plants. The plant must grow quickly and consume large quantities of water in a short time. A good plant would also be able to remediate more than one pollutant because pollution rarely occurs as a single compound. Poplars and cottonwoods are being studied extensively because they can used as much as 25 to 350 gallons of water per day, and they can remediate a wide variety of organic compounds, including LNAPL’s. Phytoremediation has been shown to work on metals and moderately hydrophobic compounds such as BTEX compounds, chlorinated solvents, ammunition wastes, and nitrogen compounds . Yellow poplars are generally favored by Environmental Scientists for use in phytoremediation at this time. They can grow up to 15 feet per year and absorb 25 gallons of water a day. They have an extensive root system, and are resistant to everything from gypsy moths to toxic wastes. Brave new world2 EssayEnvironment Essays

The Flea by John Donne and Porthyrias Lover by Robert Browning Essay Example For Students

The Flea by John Donne and Porthyrias Lover by Robert Browning Essay The two poems I am studying are The Flea by John Donne and Porthyrias Lover by Robert Browning. The authors of both these poems approach the theme of love in very individual and original ways. I am going to examine both. The poem Porthyrias Lover is about a woman called Porthyria who is strangled to death by her lover. The man telling the story seems to want to keep Porthyria by his side forever. He has very obsessive love for her. He is possessive and jealous and his deadly mind games bring nothing but heartache for Porthyria. He wants their love to last forever and plans on doing this no matter what it takes. We will write a custom essay on The Flea by John Donne and Porthyrias Lover by Robert Browning specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Porthyrias Lover totally adores her. On her arrival she made all the cottage warm. When she entered the room she shut out the cold and nothing else mattered to him. Although its seems like he was been waiting for her he is very unresponsive as she called him and no voice replied. As much as her seems to adore her he describes her gloves as soiled, maybe saying that in his eyes she is not quite as innocent as she makes out to be. He has very complex feeling for Porthyria and there is a weird balance of power between the two of them. An example of this is around line 15. When he doesnt reply she is the one that puts his arm around her waist. He doesnt want to do it himself and is a bit distant. Maybe this is because he has found out something bad and cant bear to touch her at that time. He might be cautious or angry. Robert Browning gives the impression that something or someone is coming between them. The reader is given this idea when Porthyrias Lover is talking bout another who is love sick just as he is, the big difference being that the other persons love is all in vain. They are wasting their time because she is his and not theirs. This brings about the question is Porthyrias Lover about the man who murders or could it be about another lover the person that is keeping Porthyria away him. Finding out that Porthyria is his is something that takes him by surprise. At last he knew Porthyria worshipped him and he finally had her to himself. Porthyria is finally his and he wanted that moment to last forever, this being his motive for murder. At that moment Porthyrias soiled past had been forgotten and at last she seemed perfectly pure and good. We are given the impression that Porthyria has strayed before so maybe the lover thinks the only way to make her his forever is to kill her. He can only be sure she is his alone if she is dead. The lover makes killing Porthyria sound so shockingly simple and as if it was just something he had to do. The lead to the strangling is so matter of fact that it makes it seem the lover knew what he was doing. Everything was sorted in his head and he was in no doubt of what he had to do. The mine, mine made me think that he was going a bit crazy and that it was only a matter of time before he panicked and did something irrational. As soon as he had strangled her he started making excuses. It seemed as if he was trying to convince the reader as well as himself that his actions were justified as he repeats that he believes she felt no pain. He is in denial and feels he has to say things more than once to believe them. Afterwards he seems weary and checks to see if she is still there. I think that the simile as a shut bud holds a bee is saying that although Porthyria looked sweet and innocent on the outside there was something within her that was nasty. By killing her the evil inside could never be let out again. Now she is dead the lover is finally in control as he propped her head up and kissed her cheek. This is a weird reversal as at the beginning of them poem Porthyria was the one who put his arm around her. He finally has the power. .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 , .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .postImageUrl , .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 , .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575:hover , .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575:visited , .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575:active { border:0!important; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575:active , .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575 .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3d3c9336a1fc1b3066fb28f8d5742575:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: How does Robert Browning convey the feelings of narrator for the woman in each of the two poems 'Porphyria's Lover and 'My Last Duchess' EssayPorthyria is no longer described as she towards the end of the poem. Her love for her lover for her lover is not her love anymore it has now changed to its love. The lover has finally got what he wanted, Porthyria as his possession. When Porthyria first enters the room she is described as gliding in which makes her seem graceful and elegant, a respectable woman. Although she seems like the typical perfect woman with her long yellow hair and smooth white shoulders she is also described as soiled which makes her seem dirty and impure. Maybe she is cheating on him or maybe on someone else were not told. The reader is not told why Porthyria is there or what prompted her visit but it seems like they were meeting in secret. The descriptions of the warm cottage, the blazing fire and the elm tops being blown about in the wind give the impression of a private secluded haven. In lines 22-25 it also gives the impression of there being another person who Porthyria does not want to leave because of pride. Someone who she doesnt really love and is just with because of materialistic objects. She loves him in vain. It also seems that they only met up occasionally, as passion would on prevail sometimes. Maybe she is scared to commit to her lover and let her struggling passion free. The poem is set out in a long organised continuous list. Maybe this is to show how the lovers brain is working. All this thoughts are sorted in his head and he is in a very rational state of mind. It is no surprise to himself he is going to kill Porthyria, maybe subconsciously he always knew. Throughout the poem there are rhyming couplets. Using these gives more emphasis at crucial points. Words are also out to the beginning or end of a line to also add more emphasis. Sentences are broken up to be left on their own. And strangled her is an example of this as is surprise. This puts more emphasis on it and gives the reader the impression that he was maybe doubting Porthyrias commitment. The repetition of mine makes the reader that Porthyrias lover is not sure if she is really his. He is trying to convince himself. It is written in the first person narrative, which makes the poem seem more meaningful. An interesting point is that is that the word he is never mention once yet the reader assumes the lover is a man. The word she is used a lot in the poem and maybe this is to show the lovers unhealthy obsession with Porthyria that contributes to her murder. I think that the ending is effective. The lover has finally solved his problem. He feels that he has done nothing wrong. They are finally together Porthyria has been dead all night and no one has found her so he thinks that he had done nothing wrong because if he had God would have punished him and someone would know by then. The lover says, we have not stirred he didnt say Porthyria had not stirred and I think this is because at last he feels himself and Porthyria are one. The second poem I studied was The Flea by John Donne. In this poem the poet is trying to seduce his mistress and convince her to sleep with him. There is a flirtatious love displayed within it. It is a very unconventional love poem. John Donne has made it very playful and witty which makes it seem as though he is trying to amuse himself and his mistress. It is just meant to be a fun poem. The poet chooses to use a flea as the metaphor of their love. The mistress is reluctant at loosing her maidenhood so he belittles her fears by comparing their love to a flea. He does this in three different arguments. The first stanza opens with a dramatic voice talking. He says that loosing her virginity is no big deal just like the flea. The flea has already suckd them both and mingled their bloods. They are already united within the flea so in a way it is like it has already happened. Then in the last three lines of the first stanza the poet tells is mistress that he regrets that the flea has done more than they will ever do, and it didnt have to woo her before doing it like he had. .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 , .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .postImageUrl , .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 , .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18:hover , .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18:visited , .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18:active { border:0!important; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18:active , .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18 .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u89f365498c0fd5c8515f5e895cf71d18:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Why this is hell nor are we out of it? EssayIn his next argument he tells his mistress that they are more than married within the flea. He may have leaped up as he said Oh stay because she was about to kill the flea. If she killed the living walls of jet, meaning the flea, then she would also be killing him. He wanted her to spare it and the parts of them that are united inside it too. He is not talking about marriage but sex. He is trying to hurry her along to after the marriage with talk of the marriage bed. It is described as the marriage temple to make it seem more sophisticated. The flea finds itself elevated to a temple. Their love is enshrined in it. The poet then says that the flea is sacrilegious and that killing it would be a crime against god. She would also not just be killing the flea but herself and him as well. He wants to make her laugh and relax. The poet becomes very melodramatic and full of mock horror when his mistress finally squashes the flea. It seems to become dramatic as the stanza starts cruel and sudden. He tells her the only thing the flea was guilty of was biting her, its not important that it had bitten him. He acts as if it annoyed him because he resects her. He is using mock flattery. His last argument is that she has killed the flea, which is just like using her virginity, and it wasnt so bad. Neither of them are any worse off than before. She was worrying about nothing. He talks of her honour and how they shouldnt care what other people think. They flea died for them so they shouldnt waste any time. She should just yielst to him, just give in. Their parents grudge but they have come so far so why not just do it. There is a speaking voice throughout the poem, which makes it conversational. Lines are broken up mid sentence which help show the feelings and emphasise certain bits. The lines are not end stopped either which makes the reader read it faster. The poet can tell his mistress is not impressed so he then starts to babble. The poem picks up as he tries to convince her. There are rhyming pairs throughout until the last three lines of each stanza. These three lines conclude each argument before moving on to the next. Its becomes slower and more serious as dense reasoning is used to try and convince the mistress. Each of the three stanzas starts a new argument. The argument balances as if on scales as it goes back and forth. There is alot of me and thee used. When one is mentioned the other is too, maybe to show they are as one. Lofty language is used to describe such a lowly subject. The poet is trying to elevate it to make it seem more important like their love is. The poem also seems a bit too clever making the mistress and the reader doubt there is any warmth in it or if he really only wants sex. Lighthearted ideas are used to amuse. The Flea is an unconventional love poem that is very well thought out. Most love poems are about flowers and sunshine and this poem is about a flea, which is an original yet unusual idea. In both poems the poet is trying to convince someone that what the want or what they have done is right. In Porthyrias Lover he is trying to convince the reader, and himself, that killing Porthyria was the right thing to do where as in The Flea the poet is trying to convince his mistress to loose her maidenhood. Porthyria and the mistress are both made out to be respectable women. They dont want to do anything to harm their honour. For the mistress it means not loosing her virginity when she is not married and for Porthyria its not carrying on with two lovers as the poet suggests. There is a big contrast between the two poems. Although they are both love poems they are very different. In Porthyrias Lover the poet seems to really lover Porthyria but in the flea it seems as if the poet just wants to get his mistress in to bed.

Dan Flavin, Fluorescent Light Sculpture Artist

Dan Flavin, Fluorescent Light Sculpture Artist Dan Flavin (1933-1996) was an American minimalist artist known for his sculptures created using solely commercially available fluorescent light bulbs and their fixtures. He created works that ranged from a single bulb placed at an angle from the floor, to massive site-specific installations. Fast Facts: Dan Flavin Occupation: SculptorStyle: MinimalismBorn: April 1, 1933 in Jamaica, Queens, New YorkDied: November 29, 1996 in Riverhead, New YorkSpouses: Sonja Severdija (divorced 1979), Tracy HarrisChild: Stephen FlavinSelected Works: The Diagonal of Personal Ecstasy (The Diagonal of May 25, 1963) (1963), Santa Maria Annunciata (1996)Notable Quote: One might not think of light as a matter of fact, but I do. And it is, as I said, as plain and open and direct an art as you will ever find. Early Life and Education Born in the New York borough of Queens, Dan Flavin grew up in a devout Roman Catholic family. As a young child, he showed an interest in drawing, particularly wartime scenes. In 1947, Flavin entered the Immaculate Conception Preparatory Seminary in Brooklyn to study for the priesthood. Six years later, he left the seminary along with his fraternal twin brother, David, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. There, he trained as a meteorological technician and studied art through an extension program provided by the University of Maryland in Korea. Rose Hartman / Getty Images After returning to the U.S., Flavin left the military and ultimately enrolled at Columbia University to study art history as well as painting and drawing. Before graduating, he left college and began working jobs in the mailroom at the Guggenheim Museum and as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art to gain entry into the New York art scene. Minimalist Light Sculpture Dan Flavins early drawings and paintings show a strong influence of abstract expressionism. He also created assembled mixed media sculptures that relate to the movement. Some speculate that Jasper Johns use of light bulbs and flashlights in his assemblages might have impacted the creation of Flavins early works with light. In 1961, Flavin began to design his first Icon pieces with his wife, Sonja Severdija. He first exhibited the light sculptures in 1964. They consisted of box constructions illuminated by incandescent and fluorescent lights. Untitled (To Don Judd, Colorist) (1987). Wikimedia Commons / Creative Commons 2.0 By 1963, Flavin stopped working with canvas. He used only fluorescent light bulbs and fixtures. One of the first works in his mature style was The Diagonal of Personal Ecstasy (The Diagonal of May 25, 1963). It consisted of a yellow fluorescent light placed on the wall at a 45 degree angle with the floor. Flavin dedicated the piece to sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Dan Flavin later explained that his discovery of the potential of the fluorescent bulb was a significant revelation. Hed always admired the readymade sculptures of Marcel Duchamp, and he realized that the bulbs were objects in a basic form that he could use in an infinite number of ways. Many of Flavins most significant works are dedications to artist friends and gallery owners. One of those, Untitled (To Dan Judd, Colorist), is a tribute to another artist who, along with Dan Flavin, helped define minimalist art. The pair were close friends, and Judd even named his son Flavin. Interior of Santa Maria Annunciata in Milan, Italy. Wikimedia Commons / Creative Commons 3.0 In a clever reference to another of the most prominent minimalists of the 20th century, Dan Flavin created Greens Crossing Greens (to Piet Mondrian Who Lacked Green). Mondrian worked almost entirely with primary colors, black and white, ignoring blended colors like green. Later Life and Work Later in his career, Dan Flavin focused on large-scale installations utilizing colored fluorescent lights. One of his corridor constructions, Untitled (to Jan and Ron Greenberg), was created for a solo show at the St. Louis Art Museum in 1973. Flavin often designed sculptures but didnt construct them until someone purchased them or provided a location for construction. As a result, he left behind drawings and designs for more than 1,000 sculptures when he died in 1996. The last work completed before Dan Flavins death was the lighting of the Santa Maria Annunciata church in Milan, Italy. It is a 1932 Romanesque Revival building, and Flavin completed his plans two days before his death. The church completed the installation one year later. To Saskia, Sixtina, Thordis (1973). Philippe Huguen / Getty Images Legacy Dan Flavins decision to work solely with fluorescent light bulbs as the medium for the construction of his sculptures makes him unique among major 20th-century artists. He helped define minimalism using such limited materials, and he introduced the idea of impermanence to his work. Flavins works only exist until the lights burn out, and the light itself is the analogous element to other sculptors use of concrete, glass, or steel. He influenced a wave of later light artists including Olafur Eliasson and James Turrell. Source Fuchs, Rainier. Dan Flavin. Hatje Cantz, 2013.

Is the lenght of psychtherapy related to the nature of treatment or to Essay

Is the lenght of psychtherapy related to the nature of treatment or to the nature of psychological disorders - Essay Example Focal psychotherapy is a limited form of psychotherapy implying an existence of a specific problem and using so-called focused therapy for treating this problem. Psychoanalytic counseling is usually working with specific life situation occurred. It may be a period ranging from one meeting to several years. In some cases a person, who wishes to obtain psychoanalytic help, can choose the duration of treatment depending on the goals and circumstances. The duration and frequency of meetings are determined by the patient and the psychoanalyst and does not necessarily take a long time. If we talk about psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, they are never limited to a specific time or course of treatment. Together these findings suggest that the length of any psychotherapy is related to the severity of mental disease. Thus, the argument is that the duration of therapy depends on the nature of stated problem and the patient's personality, the methods and various techniques should be chosen accordingly. Key words: psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic theory, psychological disorder. Introduction Nowadays it is almost impossible to avoid stressfulness, anxiety and disturbance. The tempo of our contemporary life is so fast, that sometimes we really have no time just to get some rest, calm down and have a serious look at things happening in our life. We become too nervous, too irritated, too tired and unsatisfied with everything and anyone. Sometimes it is very difficult and even impossible to single out a definite reason for being so unhappy and distressed. As a matter of fact, such behavior becomes the reason of quarrels and scandals at work and home. Some people can cope with their problems by themselves, but some really need professional help and even treatment. Nobody can deny that everybody needs being heard and understood. With the help of mental health practitioners a lot of people are able to face their fears, doubts, complexes and thus, they ca n fight their own demons successfully. From ancient times people regarded the mental disorders as the most difficult to treat. Such illnesses were considered to be connected with human’s soul and they were almost incurable. In some countries such mentally sick people were supposed to be cursed, they were feared and sickening. In Russia, however, whacky people, or as they were called â€Å"God’s fools†, were considered to be blessed and piety; it was a great sin to hurt or abuse them somehow. Nevertheless, such people were never tried to be treated. But time is changing and there appeared a science that was able to give hope to hopeless, the science able to treat souls. Psychotherapy is a comparatively young science, and it is defined as treatment of different mental and emotional disorders by means of psychological methods. It is not a secret that at the present time more and more people try to seek this help in the offices of psychotherapists. It is necessary f or them to speak to a professional, to get a useful piece of advice and find a rest at last. But still it is not so easy. The period of recovering from any disease is always uneasy and complicated with lots of factors (Bateson, 1958). The therapist should understand the patient's problems, and actively help him overcome such hazards of life

Cultural Competent Care Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Cultural Competent Care - Essay Example As the study stresses one of the models for understanding cultural competence has been provided by Campinha-Bacote which serves as a framework for the concept and teaches caregivers to become culturally competent. According to this model culturally competent care can be achieved through the integration of knowledge and awareness about various cultures; the skill and desire to become culturally competent; and from the different encounters with culturally diverse populations. Caregivers would be able to provide culturally competent care when they gain more knowledge about the diverse cultural and ethnical groups whom they are likely to encounter. In addition, self-analyses about any existing prejudice notion and bias against any culture or ethnical group would also help to overcome any inherent stigma. Continuous encounters with culturally diverse populations will help them to change the existing beliefs about a particular culture and develop a more refined attitude towards such indivi duals. Above all caregivers should also have the basic desire to become culturally competent and provide universal care to all their patients. In order to meet this end they should also be willing to develop their skills in handling patients from diverse cultural backgrounds without and collect the relevant details without hurting their cultural or ethnical sentiments. The following diagram provides a visual analogy of the Campinha-Bacote model. This paper outlines it should also be noted that cultural competent care does not only encompasses culturally or ethnically diverse populations as it also includes those who belong to a marginalized section of the population such as those with disabilities and people who belong to the third gender. It is important that such marginalized people are afforded similar treatment and are not discriminated or stigmatized on the basis of the above differences.

Major city recycling initiatives Essay Example for Free

Major city recycling initiatives Essay The population of the world continues to increase dramatically, further pushing the need for our world to adopt resource conservation as a way of life. Between 1950 and 2010, the U.S. population nearly doubled (conner) Recycling efforts must focus on water, energy, paper, metal, aluminum cans, glass, plastic, Styrofoam, steel, junk mail, garbage, tires, and even food. Although there is no federal mandate for recycling, many states have passed laws mandating that communities provide the facilities for people to recycle. Recycling efforts have taken hold in large cities. For example, recycling is the law in New York City. Resident, schools institutions, agencies, and all commercial businesses must recycle. All street evets, including block parties and street fairs, are required to recycle. Non-compliance with recycling regulations is punishable by fines starting at $25 and increasing to $500 for repeat violations (bloom 15-20). Electronic waste is a growing problem for our technological world. Proper disposal of computer, monitors, televisions, cell phone, and other ‘techno-trash’ presents its own challenges. Conservative estimates put the number of obsolete electronics that are simply thrown away at over three billion units per year (chang 40-51). These electronic devices contain heavy metals and other toxins. Harmful toxins which, when released into the environment, can contaminate our water, land and air. Lead, mercury, and cadmium are large cities are working to address this global e-waste crisis caused by improper computer and electronic recycling. Cities all across the country have implemented recycling programs. Since there is no national law that mandates recycling, state and local governments set recycling laws. California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon, and Vermont have passed laws that establish deposits and refunds on bottles and cans for beverages. Cities such as Seattle and New York impose fines for violating recycling laws. What canyou do to advance recycling in your community? The Mad Hamlet :: essays research papers

The Mad Hamlet William Shakespeare wrote "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark". "Hamlet, Prince of Denmark" is a tragedy. William Shakespeare was born 1564 and died 1616. William Shakespeare himself, was one of the greatest play writers of all times. Hamlet was an odd character in the play because of the way he acted. Hamlet is intelligent, mad, and selfish. Hamlet is a very intelligent character. Claudius and Polonius planned to send Hamlet to England to be put to death, escorted by Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Hamlet was supposed to be killed in England by getting beheaded, but he found a way around it. "†¦ My head should be struck off," (V, 2) "†¦Read it at more leisure†¦" (V, 2) and "†¦Devised a new commission, wrote it fair..." (V, 2) shows how Hamlet outsmarted Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Claudius, and Polonius. Hamlet wrote a different letter that said that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were to be executed, and therefore cheated death. Hamlet revenged his father's death by murdering Claudius. After Hamlet found out that the sword he and Laertes were struck with was poisoned he then stabbed Claudius with it; "The point envenom'd too? Then, venom, to thy work." (V, 2) From Hamlet's point of view, what he did to Ophelia was intelligent. When Ophelia went mad she said, "T omorrow is Saint Valentine's Day†¦ Never departed more," (IV, 5) and "Young men will do't, if they come to't†¦ You promised me to wed." (IV, 5) Ophelia was saying that Hamlet told her that they would get married if she had sex with him, and that he never showed any love for her, this was intelligent from Hamlet's or some males point of view. Hamlet was mad throughout the whole play. Hamlet murdered Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Claudius, Laertes, Polonius, and may have been the reason Ophelia went mad and drowned. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern: "He should the bearers†¦" (V, 2) Claudius: "†¦ Then, venom, to thy work," (V, 2) Laertes: "They bleed on both sides†¦" (V, 2) Polonius: "†¦Dead for a ducat, dead," (III, 4) Ophelia: "What the fair Ophelia!" (V, 2) At one point Hamlet was so mad and depressed he wanted to kill himself. "To be, or not to be, that is the question†¦" (III, 1) The worst possible thoughts that Hamlet could have ever thought, he thought incestuously about his mother and himself. He never said that he wanted to be with his mother, but he was just mad that Claudius took the throne from him at the beginning of the play, not that his father was dead.
